The purpose of a hobby lathe is light duty work, making something for fun, or maybe making a part to fix a toaster or a fan or your old car.

Both will take me grocery shopping, but yea, the Nissan isn't too much use on a track. Is it a flaming turd next to a top of the line Porche? Of course not, it has a purpose. Honestly, I don't understand how people who obviously know what they are talking about say that a usable it rather simple and lightweight hobby lathe that cost maybe 1000 dollars (I don't honestly know what they cost in today's money, but I bet I'm not that far off.) is "a flaming turd" when compared to a 10 ton piece of industrial equipment that's priced in the mid six figures. They are just fine, and last time I used them, maybe 3 years ago, they didn't crumble to dust as if they drank from they fake grail. I should also point out, I have some Zamak change gears that date back to the 1930s. The early models had plain bearings while the later ones used tapered roller bearings. The Zamak gears were obviously not just about cost, or they would have replaced them with something better as the years went on. They made them for something like 50 years. Those small lathes were an incredibly successful product line. And the tool still works while your waiting for the replacement to come in, you just can't use that particular ratio. You don't even have to actually dissassemble anything to fix the damage.

And the amateurs that bought those lathes do that a lot. Crash the tool into the chuck and all you end up doing is taking a few teeth off a Zamak gear. Zamak was dirt cheap to make and replacement parts were cheap as well. And the lathe was built in part to be sold to be sold amateur machinists. Its weaker than the steel and cast iron of the rest of the lathe. Zamak absolutely has a purpose in those old 618 lathes. at city collage back in the 80" there was a guy that was machining a set of i believe it was 1909 k winton motor ceases the org were self destructing so he had two set cast one for replacement one to hopefully recoup when i was at chemtronices for a year they had this heat treat oven for the aluminum compressor rings for jet motors i was told that the hemp was ramped up to a target temp held there for a time then ramped back down to harden the part but that the part would keep getting harder at a slower rate tell it falls apart but that it would not happen in are life time don't know just what i was told mite be up there with that left hand wrench thing I had some of the dunlop 109 lathe lots of zamak no real issue there but i think a lot of us have seen something made of it that has self destructed and like i was saying before most if not all the items i have seen were stored in areas were they got damp and were in contact with steel so like rivets in a jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier it becomes a battery one was a powder measure on a star reloading press the other was a savage single shot 22 bolt gun with a zamak receiver.
